At Chateau de Saint Cosme - located north of the village of Gigondas - wine making dates back to Gallo-Romanic times. The property has been in the same family since 1490, and this family are wine growers for already 14 generations. The winery has 15 hectares with old vines, averaging 60 years, with a yield of around 27hl/ha. The terroir is apparently homogeneous, but it's actually geologically very diverse as the close-by mountain range, the Dentelles de Montmirail, makes it very complicated. The dedication of the owners/wine makers of Saint Cosme is total. They want to express at their best the extraordinary potential of the terroirs in combination with the old vines.
Since 1997 the owners of Saint Cosme, with the know-how of the wine grower, created a trade (negotiant) activity, one could call a "Negotiant-Vigneron", that expanded their wine growing and making to many great terroirs of the Rhone valley. This activity resulted in Saint Cosme wines from famous Rhone appellations, such as Chateau-Neuf-du-Pape, Cote Rotie, St. Joseph, Crozes Hermitage etc.
